Terms of Use

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Jason Stark, a sole trader trading as Nerdbase, based in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”). Nerdbase is a trading name, not a company. These Terms cover the Biltong Buddy web app, iOS app and website at biltongbuddy.app (together, the “Service”).

By creating an account or using the Service, you confirm that:

• You are 13 or over, and if you are under 18, a parent or guardian has given you permission to use the Service; and
• You agree to these Terms, and you have read our Privacy Policy, which explains how we use your personal data.

The Service is meant for personal use by home biltong makers. If you don’t agree to these Terms, please don’t use the Service. You can delete your account at any time (Section 6).

If you are a parent or guardian and let someone under 18 use the Service, please help them understand these Terms, especially Section 9 on food safety.

Biltong Buddy is a tracking tool for people who make biltong at home. You can log batches, record piece weights, follow weight loss over time and save recipes. It also shows general guidance on curing and drying.

Biltong Buddy can’t see, smell or test your meat, so it can’t tell you whether a particular piece is safe to eat. Section 9 explains how to use the guidance.

To use the Service you need an account. You can sign up with an email address and password, Sign in with Apple, or Google. Sign-in is handled by our provider, Supabase.

You agree to:

• Give accurate information.
• Keep your sign-in details to yourself.
• Tell us promptly at [email protected] if you think someone else has got into your account.
• Have only one account, and not use anyone else’s account without their permission.

Please keep your sign-in details safe. We are not responsible for what someone else does in your account if they got in because your details were shared or not kept safe, unless that happened because we didn’t take reasonable care.

You may use the Service only lawfully and in line with these Terms. You must not:

• Use the Service in a way that breaks the law.
• Scrape, crawl or bulk-copy data from the Service without our written permission.
• Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Service, except where the law allows it.
• Sell or resell access to the Service without our written agreement.
• Upload content that is unlawful, defamatory, obscene or offensive, or that infringes someone else’s rights.
• Put an unreasonable load on our systems, try to get into parts of the Service you are not allowed to, or introduce malware.
• Pretend to be someone else.

If you break these rules, we may suspend or close your account (see Section 12).

You can create and store content in Biltong Buddy, such as batch notes, recipes and feedback.

You own it. We don’t claim ownership of anything you create.

Permission for us to use it. You give us permission to store, process and show your content only as needed to run and improve the Service for you. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from short technical delays such as backups expiring.

Your promises. When you add content, you promise that you have the right to add it and that it doesn’t break the law or anyone else’s rights.

Removing content. We may remove content that breaks these Terms or the law. If we do, we will tell you why unless the law or a safety concern stops us.

You can delete your account at any time in the app under Settings › Privacy & Account › Delete Account. We email you a confirmation link, and once you confirm, your account and data are deleted straight away. This can’t be undone. If you can’t get into the app, email [email protected] and we will help.

You can also download a copy of your data first, under Settings › Privacy & Account › Export My Data. Our Privacy Policy explains all your data rights.

The Biltong Buddy name, logo, design and the other materials that make up the Service (apart from your content) belong to us or to people who have licensed them to us.

We give you a personal, non-transferable permission to use the Service for your own non-commercial use, in line with these Terms. Please don’t copy, modify, sell or republish the Service, or use our name or logo, without our written permission.

We use these providers to run the Service. Our Privacy Policy explains what personal data each one handles and how it is protected.

The Service may link to other websites, such as food-safety authorities. We don’t control those websites and are not responsible for their content.

What the app does. Biltong Buddy records the weights, times and conditions you enter and works out figures such as weight-loss percentage. It does not test your meat for bacteria, mould or moisture, and it can’t confirm that a batch is safe.

About the guidance. Targets such as salt and vinegar amounts, drying times and weight-loss percentages are general guidance drawn from published sources. They help lower the risk but can’t remove it. The guidance has not been independently reviewed by a food scientist or approved by any food-safety authority. It is not professional food-safety, medical or dietary advice.

Your part. You choose your meat, recipe, drying set-up and timings, and you decide whether to eat or share what you make. In particular:

• If you are under 18, only cure, dry and eat biltong with an adult supervising you.
• Check for spoilage and mould, and throw away anything you are unsure about.
• Take extra care if you are cooking for anyone pregnant, elderly, very young or with a weakened immune system. Home-dried meat can cause serious illness, and a doctor or food-safety professional can advise.
• If you make biltong to sell or to share beyond your household, follow the food laws where you live. In the UK, see the Food Standards Agency or, in Scotland, Food Standards Scotland. Elsewhere, check with your local food-safety authority.

What we are responsible for. We are not responsible for health problems caused by things outside our control, such as the condition of the meat when you bought it or not following the guidance. This does not limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.

The Service is free. We try to keep it accurate and running, but we can’t promise it will always be available, free of errors or suitable for every purpose.

Foreseeable loss. If we break these Terms or fail to take reasonable care, we are responsible for loss you suffer that was a foreseeable result. Loss is foreseeable if it was obvious it would happen, or if we both knew it might happen when you started using the Service. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable.

Personal use only. The Service is for personal, non-commercial use. If you use it for a business, we are not responsible for loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity.

Keep your own records. Please keep your own copy of anything important by using Export My Data.

Limit. Apart from the liabilities listed in “What we never exclude” above, our total liability to you for anything to do with the Service is limited to £100. We will review this limit before we introduce paid features.

If you break these Terms (for example by adding content you don’t have the right to share) and someone makes a claim against us because of what you did, you may have to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it. This doesn’t apply where we are at fault.

By us. We may suspend or close your account if:

• You seriously break these Terms and, where it can be put right, you don’t put it right within 14 days of us asking you to;
• We reasonably suspect fraud, abuse or illegal activity on your account; or
• The law requires us to.

We will tell you before we act and explain why, unless the law, security or the risk of harm means we can’t. If we decide to stop running Biltong Buddy altogether, we will give you reasonable notice by email so you can download your data.

By you. You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time, as described in Section 6.

What continues afterwards. If your account ends, Sections 7, 9, 10, 11 and 16 still apply to anything that happened while you used the Service.

We may change these Terms to reflect changes to the Service, the law or how we run things. We will only make changes that are reasonable.

Moving to this version. If you created your account before 8 October 2026, this version applies to you from 7 November 2026, or 30 days after we email you about it if that is later. The previous version applies until then. If you don’t want to accept it, you can delete your account before that date at no cost.

If we make a material change, we’ll email you at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you don’t want to accept it, you can delete your account before then at no cost.

We may fix typing errors or make wording clearer without notice, as long as it doesn’t change your rights. The version number and effective date at the top of this page always show the current version. Previous versions are available on request from [email protected].

We try to keep the Service available at all times, but it may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance, upgrades or problems outside our control. Where we can, we will announce planned maintenance on our status page at biltongbuddy.app/status.

We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as natural disasters, power or internet failures, or an outage at one of our service providers. If this happens, we will let you know where we can and do what we reasonably can to limit the effect.

These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts. If you live elsewhere, you keep any right your local law gives you to use your local courts, and any mandatory consumer protections of the country where you live still apply to you.

Biltong Buddy is designed and directed by Jason Stark. Much of the app’s code and parts of its written content, including the in-app guidance and drafts of these Terms, were produced with AI assistants under his direction. He reviews the work before it is released.

The food-safety guidance has not been independently reviewed by a food scientist (see Section 9). The app itself doesn’t use AI, and your data is never sent to an AI service.

Parties. These Terms are between you and us. Apple Inc. is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for Biltong Buddy or its content.

Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms for the iOS app, and Apple has the right to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.

Licence scope. The permission in Section 7 is, for the iOS app, a non-transferable licence to use it on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.

Support and maintenance. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for Biltong Buddy. Please send support questions to us at [email protected].

Warranty. If the iOS app fails to meet any warranty that applies, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any). As far as the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Biltong Buddy. Any other claims about failure to meet a warranty are a matter between you and us under these Terms.

Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with any claims about Biltong Buddy, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.

Intellectual property. If someone claims that Biltong Buddy, or your use of it, infringes their intellectual property rights, we (not Apple) are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.

Legal compliance. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated by the US Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

Apple’s standard licence. For the iOS app, Apple’s standard end-user licence agreement, at apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula, applies as a minimum. Where it conflicts with these Terms, these Terms apply unless the law requires otherwise.
